police scanner?

I enjoy a police scanner model PRO-91 (radio shack) says it is 800 MHz, I be woundering what is the range surrounded by feet or mile of how far it should pick up? and is near any CHEAP way of using like anttena and making it pick up signals farther away?

You could attach a Wire to the Ariel (4 Feet Lengths), support this between trees or suspend through a washing vein.

This should improve the reception.
